Our trip to Pitumarca on Sunday was pretty uneventful. We were, however picked up in Checacupe in a van that smelled like a cattle truck, to put it generously. Perhaps because it had been used as such or because it was the festival of Senor de Huanca, no one was going to Pitumarca so we had the whole van to ourselves. This never happens, so it was a decent ride with room to stretch out. We always enjoy our time there and we arrived home in good time.
The regional and department elections are ramping up. There are cars with loudspeakers going up and down the streets broadcasting slogans etc. we’re not sure because it’s impossible to understand them. There are lots of parades and marches and posters plastered everywhere. On Election Day, October 5th it’s illegal to hold a public meeting or open a bar (ha ha ha). For the reason of no public meetings there will be no church meetings held, so in Peru, the General Conference of our church will be broadcast the following week. Since we have internet and we hope it will work, we can watch the Conference on our computers on the 4th and 5th and stay put.
Julie has five new students to teach English to, an adult woman, two teenage girls and two four year olds, all in the same family. The adult woman speaks some English, but the others are all beginners. Her afternoons will be busy Tuesday-Thursday.
Saturday was a super busy day, we met with a young man who is a new member and has some questions and doubts because of some anti-Mormon rubbish that he read. We helped with a Family History Fair and spoke at a Young Single Adult Fireside about dating. We received a call Friday night at 9:30pm asking if we could help with the dating talk!
The other meeting on Saturday was with President Harbertson, our mission president, who said some of our mission assignments were going to be changed. Rich was called as the second counselor in the mission presidency. We will be helping with four districts spread all over the mission, from Juli near the Bolivian border to Andahuaylas at the extreme north of the mission. We will get to travel to places we have never been, so that will be interesting. It will keep us busy for sure and we’ll have new stories and pictures to share. More on this next week!
Some of the dogs won't load yet so I will look at them after church. I love the ones I can see, though. Never mind, they have now loaded. Internet here is NOT high speed. Love the curs, etal.
ReplyDeleteComment on the political posters: why are so many of the same person in the same place? Are they afraid no one will notice unless there are less than 50?
Comment on the girl band(s): Like.
Comment on Yahir's little brother: Darling.
Glad you like the dogs. Re-political posters... Beats me. It falls into a category of what-the-(insert any various expressions depending on level of bemusement) are they (thinking, doing, trying to accomplish etc.) You would think one would be more than enough but, more seems to inspire the gluers and certainly makes a mess...
DeleteFurther comment: (forgotten at first): re.: corn husks: how is this conveyance propelled? Is it towed, and if not, where does the driver sit?
ReplyDeletePauline, that is a small cart attached to the back of a tri-cycle taxi. These taxis carry people all over. Basically, they are motorcycles with two wheels instead of one in the back and a small place for a couple of people to sit. That passenger compartment has been swapped for a "truck bed." The driver sits behind the little wind screen.
